Reviews and Giveaway: The Falling Angels Saga (Book 1 & Book 2) by E. Van Lowe (Presented by Bewitching Book Tours)

Book 1:  Boyfriend From Hell

Synopsis Courtesy Of Goodreads:

Fifteen year-old Megan Barnett and her single mom, Suze, have a special relationship—they are friends, close friends, who do almost everything together.

“But come on, guys, she’s my mother… Can I really tell her that while we’re snuggled up on the sofa watching Spider Man Three, I’m secretly undressing James Franco with my eyes? Of course not…”

The special bond takes a turn for the worse when Suze decides to start dating again. She hasn’t had a man in her life since Megan’s father left ten years ago.

Enter two mysterious young men, Megan’s new classmate, sinfully attractive bad boy, Guy Matson, and the dangerously handsome art dealer, Armando. Before long Megan and Suze both wind up in steamy relationships.

But neither of the handsome pair is quite what he seems. In fact, one of them is Satan, with his sights set on a new bride. Megan has precious little time to figure out how to stop him. If she doesn’t, either Megan or Suze are quite literally going to HELL.

Saph's Review:

This was a pretty good YA book.  When Megan's mom, who's been single for as long as Megan can remember, decides to start dating, Megan's not quite sure that's a good idea.   When Suze dates her first guy, Megan is not at all impressed by him.  Megan send a small prayer, wishing her mom to find someone worthy of her.  Shortly thereafter, Guy, a new guy to Megan's school, who is hotter than sin itself, comes to town and has his sights set on Megan.  And enter Armando--everything she wished for her mom to find except now that Suze is dating Armando, Megan doesn't like it.

It has such hysterical elements and antics that are so typical of a teenager.  A definite indicator of the age group of the teens (around 15-ish) is the maturity level - or immaturity level - of them.   I wasn't sure of Guy throughout the novel but the end helped me put him into perspective.  Megan made an interesting heroine.  She humiliated herself so many times in order to help keep her mom safe.  She also managed to alienate herself from her best friends, Matt and Erin along the way.  And they, Matt and Erin, along with Armando and Guy, are NOT what the seem or who they say they are.  This was a nicely played out mystery with some twists that, while easy to keep straight, kept me intrigued from start to finish.

The plot is even and makes sense all the way through the novel.  The characters are likable - even the not so nice ones.   I love the tight relationship that Megan and her mom, Suze, have in this book.  Even as everyone thinks Megan has lost her mind, the relationship, although strained at times, remains strong and intact between mother and daughter.

"Boyfriend From Hell" is a nice, easy read, and a great start to a new Young Adult series.  See review for Book 2, "Earth Angel" below.

Book 2: Earth Angel

Synopsis of Earth Angel:

Heaven Can Wait!

Just because Megan Barnett recently defeated Satan, has a fantastic new best friend, and has won the love of deliciously handsome, Guy Matson, doesn’t mean her troubles are over. Far from it. For Megan doesn’t realize it, but in her possession is a powerful weapon, a weapon sought after by both angels and demons and everything in between. They will do ANYTHING to get it.

In E. Van Lowe’s humorous, romantic and thrilling sequel to Boyfriend From Hell, Megan winds up in a gripping life or death battle to save herself, the boy she loves, and all of mankind from unthinkable evil.

Saph's Review of Earth Angel:

I enjoyed Book 2 just as much as Book 1.

Now that Megan has chucked Satan back to Hell where he belongs, she can concentrate on healing her wounded heart after the death of Matt, salvaging her friendship with Erin, and spending time with her now-grounded Heavenly Angel, Guy.  Even the best laid plans have bumps in the road.

Megan still has the The Book of Calls--the tool used to defeat Satan.  Now, everyone wants the book; Angels in Heaven, Demons in Hell, and Nephilim on Earth.

There are very typical teenager moments in this book (it is YA after all).
1.  After Matt's death, the Poplarati invite her to The Explosion, a "ditch day" tradition.  She is then accused by the Principal of the school and threatened with expulsion from the school unless she gives up the names of everyone else that was there.  She refuses, not wanting to be the snitch.
2.  Guy shows up to a basketball game with a beautiful angel at his side and Megan fears the worst--he is breaking up with her for this beauty.  Of course, there are tears, accusations, and total  miscommunication.
3.  Discord between her and Suze (her mom), which is a typical teenager problem (I was a teenager once, a typical one at that).

Megan's former friend, Erin, transfers to another school and refuses to talk to Megan at all; angry because she blames Megan for Matt's death.  She also befriends some ruffians from her new school.  This particular plot line isn't explored in Book 2 but I hope it is in Book 3.

Guy, now that his wings are clipped and he's grounded to earth, spends as much time with Megan as possible. Since Suze isn't fond of him, it's mainly at school.  Megan never reveals that she is in possession of The Book Of Calls to Guy but he eventually finds out...after it's too late.  The demon obsessed with finding The Book Of Calls has tricks up his sleeve, requiring Megan to save the boy she loves.
